VEGETARIAN VAMPIRE . THREE HUNDRED AND SEVENTY . THE CULLENS [/blockquote]- - - - - - - -

appearance
Carlisle stands at a tall 6”2, with a subtle muscular figure. His body is nothing spectacular but it is clearly in shape although, his muscles are not as prominent as someone such as Emmett for example. His skin is the classic pale that all vampires share and is harder than marble and glistens beautifully in the sunlight. Unlike most other vampires however, Carlisle has topaz coloured eyes instead of the more common crimson. This is due to his alternative diet, of animal blood instead of human blood. When hunger strikes, Carlisle’s eyes turn coal black and he gains large dark circles under his eyes making him look as if he were just recovering from a black eye. This reaction to thirst is very rare to see in Carlisle however as he has managed to build up a resistance almost after his centuries as a vampire and he can go without blood for a much longer period of time than younger vampires could. Atop, his head Carlisle has silky golden hair that sweeps back away from his face perfectly. He often overhears humans whispering of how he ‘looks like a model’ with his utterly flawless features and he is frequently catching admiring glances from female co-workers. Even Charlie Swan has spoken of how the nurses can barely concentrate when Carlisle is in the room. His apparent age is that of a twenty three year old, and he struggles with trying to appear older to the humans of Fork’s as he of course tries to avoid appearing ageless.
personality
Carlisle is a very intelligent and calculating person, always taking his time to evaluate a situation before reacting. Looking at Carlisle in moments of difficulty it would be utterly impossible to detect even a sense of anxiety from the vampire, yet inside his mind thoughts would be flying erratically as he searched for the answer to the problem at hand.
With Carlisle, there is only one thing in his life that he will care about above everything else, his family. He is a completely family-orientated and he would do absolutely anything for them, even risk his own life. Compassion, is what Carlisle is known for, it’s his trademark trait so to speak. He finds it easy to sympathise with others and he acts upon those emotions with good intentions, as he will always try his best to try and improve someone’s life. Carlisle is also a natural born leader, his kind and honest personality leads to others being able to trust him almost instantly and he has no struggle winning someone over to his side.
Being a very gentle creature, Carlisle frowns upon any act of violence - whether it be from vampires, humans, werewolves or shapeshifters. He would never wish to bring anyone harm unless it was a last resort. It goes totally against his nature as a doctor. Trying to work things out in a more civilised way, is what Carlisle prefers.
history
It was a beautiful summer evening on the 24th of June 1640 in London, England when Lilith and Peter Cullen’s first born came into the world. It was a beautiful baby boy who they later named Carlisle. Lilith was totally besotted with him and tended to him with the greatest affection a mother could possibly have for her son. Peter, however, had bigger and better ideas for his son - seeing him as more of a tool than as his son – already planning how his son would be his heir, and join him in his quest against evil. Peter was in fact an Anglican pastor, and his popularity was blossoming with his followers increasing due to the current religious, and political, upheaval.
Joining with the other local pastors, Peter would muster as many men as possible and then conduct hunts for witches, werewolves and vampires alike as they attempted to rid the world of evil and sin. Unfortunately, the hate filled group had no real evidence for the existence of these species and they would often kill innocent citizens who they believed to be horrific creatures despite their victim’s pleas of innocence. As a child, Carlisle was taught rigorously by his father in the way of God as well as studying history, art, and english but, the one thing that Carlisle had drilled into his mind was how he should hate certain groups – including, vampires, witches and werewolves of course. Carlisle was far too compassionate for Peter’s liking and he tried futilely to eradicate it but, it was far too much a part of Carlisle. Nonetheless, Carlisle did hate the creatures, just not as much as his father would have liked.
Peter, eventually became too old to continue with the hunts and Carlisle was appointed head of the raids although, he was far less comfortable with killing than his father was and he was reluctant to hunt simply to fulfil the bloodlust of the local people. So, he spent time applying his knowledge and tracking down a real coven of vampires. The coven was of average size, as it consisted of three vampires, each of them was ancient and they spoke only Latin. They had been living in the sewers of London for months and appearing through a sewer grate late at night to feed. Carlisle watched them and noticed the pattern in which they would leave to feed: one at a time, every fortnight on Wednesday.
Once prepared, Carlisle gathered his forces, armed with pitchforks and torches, and they waited for one of the vampires to appear. Eventually, one did. He was weakened by hunger and after running from the mob for only a few moments he turned and attacked Carlisle who had been leading the group. With the humans attacking him, he could not drain Carlisle as he would have liked to and he had to dispatch a few of them who he then proceeded to drink from until they were dry. By this point, the humans were all retreating in terror, leaving the wounded to be killed by the vampire.
As Carlisle lay there in the street, bleeding from his bite wound and in tremendous pain from the vampire’s venom, he knew what was happening to him. He was turning into one of them. He knew he had to hide; anything that the vampire had infected would be killed. So, despite the ferocious pain that was flaming through his body, Carlisle dragged himself into a nearby cellar where he hid under a large mound of rotting potatoes. He was forced to fight off the urge to scream in pain. His body felt as if it were on fire, as if there were thousands of flames burning inside of him that could not be extinguished. He prayed silently to himself constantly, wishing that the pain would go away. Amazingly, he managed to remain silent through his three days of torture and he opened his eyes with new vision and the thought of what he had become. A monster.
He was completely horrified by himself and he took to hiding in a forest, where he tried to commit suicide several times. He began by attempting to drown himself, and when that failed he tried other methods such as, impaling himself, throwing himself off a cliff and starvation. It was during his starvation method that he was hiding in a cave when a herd of deer were passing. Half-crazed with bloodlust he lost control of himself and leaped onto one and fed from it. He felt strengthened afterwards, as well as having the burning in his throat soothed somewhat. It was then that he realised, he did not have to be a monster, he could feed off of animals to survive instead. It seemed a very humane alternative.
He began to live again, spending his nights studying or hunting. He never returned to his home, and instead he began travelling. Each time he arrived in a new place, it gave him a new source of knowledge to study from. One profession particularly caught his eye, the medical profession. He studied meticulously and became a great doctor, however, there was the problem of his bloodlust but, Carlisle was so opposed to taking human life that he was able to resist. During his travels, Carlisle was in Italy, Volterra to be precise, and he stumbled across the Volturi, a large coven of vampires who were far more civilised that those found in the sewers of London.
Carlisle spent many years with the Volturi, they were fascinated by the way he lived yet, they tried to convert him to his natural food source several times but each attempt failed and Carlisle’s record remained intact. Whilst in Volterra, Carlisle grew a strange reputation for himself, as a vampire who fought evil and was entirely good; he was spoken of in tales as Stregoni Benefici.
Feeling that his time was over in Italy, Carlisle ventured to America, but he left with a new sense of extreme loneliness. He had always been somewhat lonely, but leaving seemed to have refreshed the feeling tenfold. In America, Carlisle took up work in Chicago, Illinois as a night shift doctor. It was at this time that the Spanish influenza epidemic struck, and the hospital was packed with patients. Elizabeth Masen, a patient of Carlisle’s, seemed to be losing her battle against the virus and she was slipping in and out of consciousness. In one of her more lucid moments, she grasped Carlisle’s hand seemingly oblivious to the icy hardness of it. Looking deep into Carlisle‘s eyes, she begged him to save her son saying, "You must do everything in your power. What others cannot do, that is what you must do for my Edward.” From the intensity of her words, Carlisle felt as if she knew his secret, and knew that he had the power to save her son from death. In shock, he merely nodded to her, promising her that he would try. Only minutes later, Elizabeth passed away as if she was able to leave knowing that someone was going to save her dear Edward.
Edward lay on the bed next to his mother, completely unconscious. The first thought that came into Carlisle’s mind was how Edward looked like the son he had always longed for. This boy was completely alone in the world, and Carlisle knew that he would not be searched for if he were to suddenly go missing. Returning to Elizabeth’s motionless corpse, Carlisle followed the correct procedure and took the body to the morgue. When he returned her took Edward up into his arms and then carried him back to his current home. It was there that Carlisle knew that this boy was the companion he had been wanting. Leaning over him, he whispered the words ‘I’m sorry’ to Edward and then proceeded to bite him. It took a lot of effort for Carlisle to taste blood for the first time and the bloodlust that erupted in him was huge but, with over two centuries of practice he was able to restrain himself.
Carlisle stayed with Edward during his change, only leaving to return to his work. Once the change was completed Carlisle explained everything to Edward. He then discovered that Edward was in fact one of the few vampires who had developed a unique talent, Edwards being the ability to read one’s mind but only the thought that currently passed through it. Four years later, the two males had grown close, with Carlisle as a father figure to the young newborn; he trained him in the more humane way of living. They now currently resided in Wisconsin where Carlisle was of course working as a doctor. One night, as he began his shift, a nurse informed him that a failed suicide had left a woman in such a bad condition that her body had been taken straight to the morgue. Carlisle rushed there instantly, fuelled by his compassion, even if this woman were to die she should not be left alone in the morgue to do so. It seemed incredibly wrong. Once he had set eyes on her, he recognised her instantly; he had seen this woman when she was merely a teenager suffering from a broken leg that he himself had patched up for her. The room was eerily silent, except for one faint beating; Carlisle realized it was her heart. “Esme.” He sighed, remembering her name. Carlisle was suddenly filled with the urge to save her, in the same way he had saved Edward. Instinctively, Carlisle bit into Esme’s neck as quickly as possible, injecting his venom into her system. She was so very close to the brink that Carlisle wondered if even vampire venom could save her now. But, it worked and Carlisle swiftly moved Esme’s now changing body from the morgue to his home.
Carlisle and Edward both stayed by Esme’s side as she went through the change, Carlisle only leaving to work. Once she had finished her transition Carlisle went through the same protocol he went through with Edward and explained what she had become, and the ins and outs of being a vampire. Esme adjusted very quickly to their surprise, but she was very unlike any vampire either of the two males had ever met, she was so full of emotions whereas other vampires seemed to be as hard and emotionless as their marble like skin. Carlisle and Esme were quick to fall for each other and they became mates, and they assumed the role of parents to Edward. They then went on to marry, and the trio of vampires were rather happy. They never stayed in one place for too long, humans would notice that they weren’t aging eventually and they had to move on constantly.
In 1928 however, Edward became rebellious, not wishing to follow Carlisle’s way of life any longer he left them and began to hunt humans as a nomad. Although, he did use his gift to try and only kill humans who themselves had done wrong. He hunted after murderers, rapists, paedophiles and people of that nature. Nonetheless, he still regretted that lifestyle and he eventually returned to Esme and Carlisle, much to their relief as they missed him desperately.
The family later found themselves living in New York, in 1933. One night, the strong scent of blood caught Carlisle’s attention suddenly. Worried that someone was gravely injured he rushed to the source of the scent and found a beautiful young lying broken on the street. Carlisle’s unbeating heart contorted in despair, who could have done this to this poor girl? Carlisle was then inspired by his love for Esme, he had found a partner in life and perhaps this girl could fulfil in Edward what Esme fulfilled in him. He then proceeded to change the girl who they later discovered was named Rosalie. Edward however, did not have the reaction that Carlisle had hoped for. He was incredibly angry that Carlisle had changed this girl just because he had found her on the street and he was completely furious that Carlisle had anticipated that Rosalie would be his mate. Once the change was completed Carlisle explained everything to Rosalie. After the tension between Edward and their newest coven member Rosalie, they all seemed to merge together into their family state yet again.
The next member to join their growing numbers was Emmett. Rosalie found him in the forest whilst hunting; he had been mauled by a bear and was in a very serious state. Rosalie carried him over 100 miles back to Carlisle for him to be changed. She was so insistent that Carlisle simply had to agree and he then turned Emmett and he joined their family. Edward and Emmett formed a quick brotherly bond which seemed to brighten Edward’s rather gloomy state.
The coven then moved to Forks, Washington for the first time. They particularly enjoyed the area as the sun was blocked out by clouds almost constantly and it allowed them to go out during the day. Whilst they hunted in the forest, they were confronted by a pack of werewolf shapeshifters who were set on killing the vampires as they were natural enemies. Carlisle, managed to convince their leader to stop and listen to his reason. He told them how they hunted only animals and not humans and that they were no danger to the people. They then created the treaty, which prohibited the Cullen’s from biting humans or stepping foot on Quileute land. This treaty allowed the vampires to live in peace with the werewolves until they eventually moved on from Forks.
In 1950, a petite vampire and her mate, a southern vampire, suddenly appeared on their doorstep. The tiny vampire treated them as if they were all old friends. She explained that she could see into the future which helped the Cullen’s understand how she knew so much about them. She introduced herself as Alice, and her mate as Jasper. They were welcomed into the coven with the compassion, and they fit right in.
Years later, Carlisle and his family returned to Forks. The ‘children’ all enrolled in the local high school, Carlisle worked at the hospital as a full time Doctor, and Esme worked on renovating their home. Once they were completely settled in, a certain human appeared and turned all of their lives on their heads. A human by the name of Bella Swan. The years that followed were all incredibly dramatic, watching Edward fall in love with Bella, protecting her from a crazed hunter, having to leave Forks under Edward’s orders, returning and promising to change Bella into a vampire, fighting an army of newborn vampires, killing a revenge seeking vampire, watching Edward and Bella get married, seeing Renesmee born, and turning Bella from human to vampire. Truly, they were the most eventful years for the Cullen’s and for Carlisle. Now, their huge coven is constantly on alert from a threat that is far too close to their home. In Seattle, there is an ever growing army. An army with skilled vampires, not just strong newborns, including vampires with horrific and amazing abilities. What will become of Carlisle’s family that he worked so very hard for?
